Is this Scobez's sarcastic face? - Tad Goes to 11
re: friendfeed's adolescence and indecision... is what you perceive as not knowing which way they want to go intentional? I've been thinking that way lately as a result of some of the things I've heard Bret Taylor say in conversations with Steve Gillmor and Scoble, and also Paul B. (EDIT:oops, sorry Ben G., not Paul B.) in the recent FFundercats podcast. Do they need to pick only one of the directions you've outlined? Might they just as well pick two or all three? - Jim Jannotti
Jim: they should build a platform that enables all sorts of weirdness and wackyness. They should never listen to the users. Why? Well, let's say I'm a Porsche owner. Now, ask me what I want. Let's see. Smoother ride. More leg room. Bigger trunk. Well, I just asked for a Volvo. - Robert Scoble
Tad: I wish I had time to do photomemes tonight. Sigh. - Robert Scoble
what if weirdness and wackiness are what we want? What if that fills a niche that no one else is filling? What if other social networks are not just narrow, but myopic? Or were you just being ironic? - Jim Jannotti
FriendFeed Lovers: You're doing it right! - chethan thimmappa
Scoble, don't you have a camera on your cell phone? mail2ff or pikchur will make meme cooperation more than possible - Rahsheen ™
There hasn't been many social sites that can capture & hold me for very long (beyond a month). If FF has done that (and it has) it is doing something right. This is the one for me. If you have a good understanding of how FF works, and you have done your part to try to participate by commenting & liking things, and friending people that share content you like, and it's not for you, oh well...go back to one of those ones I found boring. You'll be happier there. - April Russo
Jim, absolutely they could do a combination there in. I just wonder though if Paul and team know which ones though :-) I'm not saying they wont have an idea of direction, but I've heard Paul say before how FF has already gone in directions they didn't expect, so I see part of this as the site evolving. Still, ultimately you need to pin down your end game to hit the target - Duncan Riley
April, couldn't agree more. I spend more time here than any other service now, and like you I've never really been one to be easily captured - Duncan Riley
Rahsheen: that photo is of me showing an error message on Twitter. - Robert Scoble
Rahsheen: Jesse Stay took that photo right before I went into Twitter: http://picasaweb.google.com/je... - Robert Scoble
always ahead of the game Robert... - Robin
April and Duncan: I have a theory on why that is: because everything is decentralized here. The view, the moderation, etc. Very different from old-school BBS's. - Robert Scoble
I was just pointing out that participating in photo memes is super easy :) - Rahsheen ™
I still find it funny that I wore a friendfeed shirt into a pretty interesting meeting at Twitter. I should wear my twitter shirt into friendfeed just to be fair! - Robert Scoble
Rasheen: the photo seemed apt. Hit two memes: Scoble had the FF t-shirt on (which is how I found it in Google), and then the fail message on the iPhone tied into the "you're doing it wrong" part. Actually, matching like that isn't always easy. Hat tip to Jesse Stay on the pic as well (linked in the post with credit) - Duncan Riley
YES! Robert, you hit it right on the head. It's decentralized. I am one of those people that feel more comfortable in a chatroom on irc with an auto-admin bot that op's everyone than Myspace or Facebook, or even better, my own decentralized chatroom, hosted on my own PC, as part of a rogue underground P2P network. And I thrive in the middle of what some people would call chaos, disorder, insanity, or anarchy. (and I noticed that most that can't handle environments like that usually make the most drama) - April Russo
April, Robert agree to a point. It's a safer, more friendly version of IRC, but it does tap into those raw conversations many of us use to have there. - Duncan Riley
Why does it say that Robert Scoble has long since left FF? - Tanath
Nice job on this post Duncan, extra points for the cool Scoble photo! :) - Susan Beebe
I liked the Sarah Lacy quote. She says FriendFeed is being "myopic and naive" by relying on "bloggers" instead of "real people" to spread the word. If FriendFeed is to ever "go mainstream" you must appeal to hockey moms and Joe Sixpack, like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. (Of course Facebook started off only for kids, Twitter was originally for internal use only at Odeo, and LinkedIn only makes money by selling subscriptions to salespeople and recruiters, but I digress.) - Karim
Where's the evidence that it's being used beyond first adopters, I see no anecdotal stuff supporting the assertion. To the contrary the first adopters are taking up an even greater proportion of the space to sell product. No one in main street is using it, they're on facebook. - Donovan Slennon
Donovan, FB isn't particularly 'main street' either. People I went to high school and college are on it, but none of the 40+ people I know. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Drilling down into her original blog post (http://www.sarahlacy.com/sarah...) she seems really upset that FriendFeed is not returning her calls or emails. How do you expect to ever become a success without sucking up to Sarah Lacy, FriendFeed? "This is not an ego thing," she assures us. But she has a show that reaches "millions and millions" of people and frankly you are all idiots for not taking advantage of that. </sarcasm> - Karim
Scobez: It only takes a minute or two to snap a pic and post it. :P :D - Tad Goes to 11
Donavan, most of the people even responding on this thread aren't in my first adopters list. That's proof alone. Take a look at my friend list, you won't see too many tech types or first adopters in it. - Duncan Riley
Karim, I met Sarah at Gnomedex, I actually like her, although honestly I didn't think I would before I met her. It's a glib comment from her, and maybe a small part of the analysis is slanted because of it; but I didn't mention it in the post because I don't think its the underlying cause of her misunderstanding of FriendFeed. I really think, as I started in the post, that FriendFeed is the new Twitter in terms of being an easy target to pick on. Unlike Twitter in 2007, I don't think it's deserved with FF - Duncan Riley
And Donavan, you want further proof: look at the people taking shots at FF...the common thread is that they are nearly all first adopters themselves. This isn't a trendy first adopter site by any stretch. It may have been for 5 minutes, but most have gone now - Duncan Riley
yeah well the beginning to me sounded like her argument was "Louis Gray is so right" and FriendFeed is too complicated, it needs to be dumbed down for the masses if it wants to go mainstream -- then it turns into this WTF WHY WON'T YOU RETURN MY CALLS? I AM FRIENDS WITH ZUCKERBERG! DON'T YOU REALIZE I CAN MAKE YOU OR BREAK YOU? rant, at which point her business advice seemed a *touch* disingenuous -- to me, anyway. ;-) - Karim
Proof - step outside with a notepad and poll 1,000 passers by on the sidewalk. Maybe 3 have heard of it. My guess is zero or 1. And it's not changing. FB not mainstream is just deluded. - Donovan Slennon
Lookin' good, Robert! That was taken with my iPhone - I wish I had taken that with my nicer SLR so you could see the website that was giving the error. :-) That picture is irony, on so many levels! Robert - do you remember what I asked them there? I asked if they were going to have a manual approval process on apps, similar to Facebook's. We now know why that's important. :-) - Jesse Stay
Scoble, does that guy ever sleep? - darnell via Nambu
Donovan, first, it seems like it's a little bit of an assumption to say FriendFeed *wants* to go mainstream right now. Maybe they're focusing on scaling, or features, or stuff Twitter failed to implement before the Fail Whale became the laughing stock of the interwebs for months. Second, my point was that neither Facebook nor Twitter were *created* as things that were intended to appeal to a mainstream audience. They focused on providing a cool service to a very small audience. Mainstream came *later.* - Karim
Third, how fucking big does your ego have to be to tell some of the brightest coders in the world that they need to stop building cool stuff and talk to you and your "millions and millions" of readers? - Karim
Fourth, even if they want to "go mainstream" right now this second, how helpful is that kind of interview going to be, particularly when the journalist in question is on the record as saying your service is too complicated for ordinary mortals, that it has "done nothing to reengage" her as an "inactive user," and that she's not sure her audience of "millions and millions" cares about the service anyway? - Karim
To say that FB and Twitter weren't created to go mainstream is wrong. Of course they are/were. Every day they don't cross the mainstream divide, the wider the divide becomes. Twitter survived and thrived because of superb utility to members, virality and network effect and it still has a very long way to go. Brightest coders in the world they might be but who cares. Unfortunately FF does alot of things nicely but not 1 thing really well which is what every service needs for a compelling use case. To say they might not want to go mainstream now is giving them far too much leeway (sic). - Donovan Slennon
Donovan, Facebook was originally restricted to members of Harvard College only. The original idea was called "HarvardConnection," then "ConnectU," which is still limited to colleges and universities (they settled out of court with Facebook). "HarvardConnection" is clearly not a mainstream World Domination Plan. - Karim
Donovan "step outside with a notepad and poll 1,000 passers by on the sidewalk." the same was once true for Twitter AND Facebook. Twitter in particular was long the exclusive domain you attribute to FF, and I'd argue more so. I agree with Buchheit when he compares the growth cycle to Twitter: early days, just before the boom. Every service has to start somewhere. BTW, if we're all early adopters and FF is fucked, why are you using it? ;-) - Duncan Riley
Twitter was slapped together in two weeks as tool to be used internally at Odeo. When they started thinking other people might find it useful, they thought almost all the updates would be SMS (hence the limit). If the original architecture had been designed for the mainstream, I doubt anyone would have heard of a Fail Whale. - Karim
Duncan lets face it FF has got more in common with Technorati user profile than FB. For the record Twitter is doing better but won't go mainstream which equals double digit awareness in the market. FF's awareness in the market is actually declining as people give it a try and leave never to return which equals terrible virality. They can feature-up to the hilt but they still have to do 1 thing better than anyone that's broadly useful and I don't see it. I use the service b/c it's a good news filter for what the early adopters are saying, which together with Techmeme is my key source for tech. - Donovan Slennon
Donovan, you asked me to back my contention, I ask the same of you. Nearly all public figures show FF leveling off (like Twitter did) or in one case thriving. One set of stats shows a drop, and from a crappy service at that. Twitter has gone mainstream, turn on CNN or Fox or even MSNBC. FF is earlier in the cycle. I could be wrong forward, but either way it's far too early to call dead - Duncan Riley
Cool, lets see, will be interesting. - Donovan Slennon
Donovan, happy to play, and if I'm wrong, I'll be the first to admit it. - Duncan Riley

agree with Steve on the disclosure part and SEC disclosure rules. I touched on this in some earlier posts. Even beside a legal obligation, there is a moral obligation to let share holders know that your CEO is unwell and unable to completely do his job - Duncan Riley
Same caveats as apply to the first part of Duncan's piece. When were those pictures taken? Also should be noted that Scoble's source at the yogurt store was obviously not being straight with him, cause if that's Jobs before he lost the weight... - Dave Winer
A hormone imbalance is a plausible side-effect of having part of your pancreas removed, and some weight loss (usually associated with dumping syndrome) is expected after having the Whipple procedure. Fact is, we went through all these arguments and speculation 6 months ago, Apple chose to bury their heads in the sand and hope speculation would stop. Bad choice. - Warren
Yes, I do not think Steve wants, needs, or can lie about this. So, why not move on, and talk about technology and innovation. But yes, Apple without Steve, won't be Apple for long (they will just roll on their momentum). Nothing like a brilliant founder to keep the competitive edge. - Jeremy Chone
Dave, I'm not sure about the pics Steven has used, but I've got plenty of Jobs not looking well at Macworld last year in my Flickr account http://flickr.com/photos/dunca... Looking at the pics in the post though, I'm betting same time - Duncan Riley
I'd say the pics in the post are from the iPod Nano launch a few months ago, in comparison those photos on Flickr despite the grey stubble make him look reasonably healthy Duncan. - Warren
Warren, I haven't looked that closely, so I won't disagree. Only thing I'd note: doesn't he own any other clothes, because the dress is the same :-) - Duncan Riley
Non-issue. I know people who had hormone imbalances and had no clue. Millions of people go to work everyday with hormone imbalances, it's called menopause. SELL SELL SELL! - Bwana
Bwana, so you're saying that it's BS? Interesting, I couldn't find out a lot about it online. Oddly the only things I could find kept saying hormone imbalance= gain weight. That must be my excuse, and not the beer :-) - Duncan Riley
1UP Bwana - Akiva Moskovitz
hormonal imbalances can cause weight loss as well. Depends on which hormone. There are a lot of different hormones. Thyroid issues, for instance, can cause weight loss. - Spidra Webster
Duncan, it can be weight gain or weight loss. http://www.testsymptomsathome.... There's a bajillion different symptoms for it though. I believe this is why people don't realize they have it. - Bwana
I have a bunch of jokes on deck about Steve Jobs being estrogen dominant and demanding colorful iPods...but I'm holding them in... - Bwana
Bwana: I heard that he randomly fires people in the Apple offices on the thinnest of pretenses... wonder if that happens every four weeks or so? :-p - Warren
Oh Warren, this opens up the ultimate can of jokes :P - Bwana
Duncan: That's kinda like asking whether the members of Devo could possibly not wear yellow overalls and hats that look like freakin flower pots. Sure, they could, but then how would you know who they were :-p - Warren
Random thought: Maybe The Steve is letting the rumours go so he can continue to park diagonally in handicap spaces and claim that he now actually has a disability? :-p - Warren

In fact ,most Chinese net.citizens can NOT found any good porn sites when long long years ago.so ,Why "China Government warned Google, Baidu and other.." ??
