"Hardly any one will remain in the cities at night. They will be places of business only. People of every class will reside in the country or in garden towns at considerable distances from the populous centres. Pneumatic railways and flying cars and many other means of quick transit will be so developed that the question of time will enter but little into one's choice of a home. Transportation will be immensely cheaper than it is at present." - Bora Zivkovic
i always wondered what that said - being too lazy to look at the liner notes :) - Christina Pikas
The original is very, very Latin. I think I prefer the modern version.... - Bora Zivkovic
when i first got a cd player in college - I bought this and proudly showed it to my dad - who then pulled out the record of the same exact recording - oops - Christina Pikas
It was made popular by Excalibur, the movie. My Dad sang it on stage as part of a choir. - Bora Zivkovic
Other than a generally link-whoring contrarianism, what does Keen bring to the table that anyone cares about? I loved Howard Rheingold's gentle diss of him "I generally steer people towards more thoughtful critics." - Dave Slusher
For some reason Steve Gillmor likes him, and I listened to him on a few Gillmor Gangs. I realized somewhere in there that he is an unreconstructed royalist. He believes that there are things that should be reserved for The Right Sort Of People, such as being able to express oneself and to publish. - Dave Slusher
which makes him a journosaurus par excellance - Bora Zivkovic
Horgan redeems himself. Johnson digs himself deeper, showing he is just nostalgic about the good old times, is essentially in a top-down mode of thinking, and also did not understand yet the world of Google. This guy gets it: http://friendfeed.com/e/28813a... Johnson does not. - Bora Zivkovic
Johnson does not understand filtering. He also thinks that NYTimes, WSJ etc. are excellent news organizations. He also does not understand that if a person is to be trusted on reporting from Iraq, s/he need not be a NYTime reporter (indoctrinated with the NYTimes newsroom BS) sent out there - it CAN be and will be an Iraqi with a wifi. - Bora Zivkovic
Johnson thinks that a science book is good if it is nicely written, accuracy be damned. Horgan responds well: "you can be sincere in your bullshit" - Bora Zivkovic
Well, I am not included this year, either (not that I wrote anything exceptionally good this year anyway), but neither is PZ or Orac or some other Big Names - it's a nice mix of posts, methinks. Quite diverse in topic, theme, form, format, tone and voice. - Bora Zivkovic
I noticed PZed and Orac weren't there, although Orac wasn't nominated. John Wilkins didn't get in either, poor fellow. I'll look through later, but I agree, the diversity is good. - Bob O'Hara
I skimmed them all earlier while helping Jenny look for e-mail addresses. There's a *lot* of variety. Not everything was interesting to me, but it was all obviously very good. I didn't make it in myself (again) even though I was actually quite pleased with one of my nominated posts, and can't possibly *do* any better. The competition was deadly! - Eva
I just noticed the keynote address topic. I actually use HeLa cells in my 9th grade biology lab and have an ethical debate with my students each year after we've used them! I'm so excited! I didn't register because my group of students is three girls and five boys, but now I really want to go. - Stacy Baker
