"Yet, while looking at the bottles in the L'Occitane store, I wondered: could it be that the world is shifting from physical to digital? At first glance it is impossible, because we live in a physical world. But increasingly, we are surrounded by all sorts of software that fundamentally works differently from hardware. In this post, we'll look at the interplay between physical and digital and argue that we are, in fact, heading towards a world dominated by digital." - ~C4Chaos via Bookmarklet

"Today's TEDTalk, from Kary Mullis, touches on a powerful topic -- how modern science is funded, and how the availability of money can drive scientific inquiry just as powerfully as curiosity or necessity can. Several other TEDTalks discuss this often-hidden driver of scientific research. Highly recommended is the TEDTalk from medical activist Michael Milken. In his work fighting prostate cancer, Milken has developed a groundbreaking approach to funding medical research to get significant, near-term results." - ~C4Chaos via Bookmarklet

"John Haught: From a scientific point of view, the Darwinian recipe might be considered to be sufficient because when you are a scientist, you don’t ask questions about the meaning of the universe or the value of things. You don’t ask about purpose; you don’t bring in the idea of subjectivity or the idea of God. From the beginning of the modern age, science decided that it would leave these things out of its consideration and focus only on the physical or material causes of things. That’s perfectly all right. That’s the scientific method." - ~C4Chaos via Bookmarklet

"I’ve written about the stages of insight leading up to the important spiritual event, which in the Theravada school of Buddhism is called stream-entry. In Zen it might be called kensho and in the Tibetan tradition it’s often referred to as the 1st bodhisattva bhumi. In any case, it’s a pivotal event that marks the first real taste that one has of emptiness or nirvana.1 So, why is stream-entry so important?" - ~C4Chaos via Bookmarklet

Death By Medicine - 1 - Life Extension
12 hours ago - lef.org - Link
"Something is wrong when regulatory agencies pretend that vitamins are dangerous, yet ignore published statistics showing that government-sanctioned medicine is the real hazard. Until now, Life Extension could cite only isolated statistics to make its case about the dangers of conventional medicine. No one had ever analyzed and combined ALL of the published literature dealing with injuries and deaths caused by government-protected medicine. That has now changed. A group of researchers meticulously reviewed the statistical evidence and their findings are absolutely shocking.4 These researchers have authored a paper titled “Deat" - ~C4Chaos via Bookmarklet

" March 10, 2006: It's official: Solar minimum has arrived. Sunspots have all but vanished. Solar flares are nonexistent. The sun is utterly quiet. Like the quiet before a storm. This week researchers announced that a storm is coming--the most intense solar maximum in fifty years. The prediction comes from a team led by Mausumi Dikpati of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). "The next sunspot cycle will be 30% to 50% stronger than the previous one," she says. If correct, the years ahead could produce a burst of solar activity second only to the historic Solar Max of 1958." - ~C4Chaos

24. The Formless Realms - Daniel Ingram

"The formless realms never fail to impress and amaze. They can also be taken to be much more significant than they really are. The trick is to come to a balanced understanding of what they are and what they aren’t, what they are useful for and what they do not accomplish. This is not always easy." - ~C4Chaos via Bookmarklet

Fulcanelli (1839 - fl.1953) is almost certainly a pseudonym assumed, in the late 19th century, by a French alchemist and esoteric author, whose identity is still debated.[1] He is also called the Master Alchemist. The appeal of Fulcanelli as a cultural phenomenon is partly due to the mystery that surrounds most aspects of his life and works; one of the anecdotes pertaining to his life retells, in particular, how his most devoted pupil Eugène Canseliet performed a successful transmutation of 100 grams of lead into gold in a laboratory of the gas works of Sarcelles at the Georgi company with the use of a small quantity of the "Projection Powder" given to him by his teacher, in the presence of Julien Champagne and Gaston Sauvage. - ~C4Chaos

Sue Blackmore: Atheists should be allowed on BBC Radio 4's Thought for the Day | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk
Sunday at 2:52 pm - guardian.co.uk - Link
"I've always enjoyed Thought for the Day (TFTD), that two-minute spot in the middle of Radio 4's Today programme, which seems to be a brief respite from the hard news, and a chance for someone to give moral or ethical reflections on current events. The trouble is that only religious speakers are invited. Rabbis, priests, imams, chaplains, and monks are there, but never humanists, agnostics, or atheists. Why not? Wouldn't it be better if they were? Morality is not the sole prerogative of the religious – there are even reasons to think that the irreligious are more moral. So why shouldn't we be invited to speak on TFTD?" - ~C4Chaos via Bookmarklet

"Why do societies fail? With lessons from the Norse of Iron Age Greenland, deforested Easter Island and present-day Montana, Jared Diamond talks about the signs that collapse is near, and how — if we see it in time — we can prevent it. Note that he mentions the conflict of interests — when Elites “insulate themselves from the consequences of their decisions, advancing their own short term interests against the interests of overall society.”" - ~C4Chaos via Bookmarklet

"The job requires him to work unnoticed, even in plain view, so Jon Favreau settles into a wooden chair at a busy Starbucks in the center of Penn Quarter. Deadline looms, and he needs to write at least half a page by the end of the day. As the espresso machines whir, Favreau opens his laptop, calls up a document titled "rough draft of inaugural" and goes to work on the most anticipated speech of Barack Obama's life." - ~C4Chaos via Bookmarklet

Scientists discover true love - Times Online
Sunday at 10:33 am - women.timesonline.co.uk - Link
"SCIENTISTS have discovered true love. Brain scans have proved that a small number of couples can respond with as much passion after 20 years as most people exhibit only in the first flush of love. The findings overturn the conventional view that love and sexual desire peak at the start of a relationship and then decline as the years pass." - ~C4Chaos via Bookmarklet
I never use "MSM" as the source for a "science-based" story. They get it wrong most of the time, and have been de-emphasizing science for years now. - Richard Walker
good point. then again, the more MSM attention they get, the more science funding they get. science is dependent on the mainstream in that way. and vice-versa. - ~C4Chaos
