Burris Is Blocked From Taking Illinois Senate Seat - NYTimes.com
2 hours ago - nytimes.com - Link
"The problem for Mr. Burris, of course, is that he was named to the seat by the embattled Illinois governor, Rod R. Blagojevich. Ms. Erickson had already said that the appointment letter forwarded by the governor’s office did not comply with Rule II of the Senate’s standing rules, which requires signatures of both the governor and the secretary of state. The Illinois secretary of state, Jesse White, has refused to sign, saying the appointment is invalid because of a federal corruption investigation surrounding the governor and what prosecutors describe as his efforts to sell the Senate seat, vacated by Mr. Obama." - Bret Taylor via Bookmarklet

I like that. Another example on how we function far better with the particular. If we can put names and faces on our competitors, it is more real to us than if we have a large mass of them. Although rationally it is easier to be in the top 20 percent in a large group than a small group, but that's not what our emotions perceive. - Joelle Nebbe

"Pakistan is moving some troops away from its western border with Afghanistan, where the United States has pressed it to combat Taliban militants, and stopping many soldiers from going on leave amid rising tensions with India, senior Pakistani officials said Friday. A senior military official said in an interview that the decision to sharply restrict leave for soldiers was taken “in view of the prevailing environment,” namely the deteriorating relations with India since the Mumbai terrorist attacks last month. He added that the Pakistani air force was “vigilant” and “alert” for the same reason. A second Pakistani security official would not say where the forces were being sent, but confirmed the troop movements and the restrictions on leave, saying “there’s an obvious reason for that.”" - Bret Taylor via Bookmarklet
I am really scared of this escalating... - Bret Taylor
Agreed. They both have badittudes and big red buttons! - Ed Shaz/NextInstinct
Yeah, this is scary as hell. There's a great movie about the India/Pakistan partition called "Earth" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt01...). Fictional, but still recommended watching for anyone interested in how things got where they are now. - Joel Webber
@Gregory: I believe you mentioned earlier living in South Asia, so I assume you have a better perspective than I do. I hope to hell you're right, because it could turn into a big nasty mess otherwise (though maybe we can hope that, because they both have nuclear weapons, they will actually avoid war). - Joel Webber
Gregory is right. For various reasons, not in the least US pressure, there isn't going to be a war. India is not going to use Nukes (the US is more likely to do so), and Pakistan is not going to go into a conventional war it can't win. It's always good political posturing. On the other hand, there is a lot of anger back home, so don't rule out surgical strikes, and a very serious tightening of the diplomatic screws, especially when the Obama government comes around. - Deepak
All the more reason for the USA to set up camp in Pakistan. Keep one eye on Afghanistan and the other on Iran, all under the pseudo-reason of peace-keeping in Pakistan... "Everything is proceeding as I have foreseen it" ~ Darth Cheney... - Mark VandenBerg
Mark, a consistent policy would help - Deepak
Pakistan and India are being manipulated by outside forces that are trying to fan the flames of hatred and violence between the West and Islam and ignite the Clash of Civilizations. They could care less about how much damage is inflicted on either Pakistanis or Indians. - Sean McBride
Sean, that's an oversimplification. While Mumbai was a very public event and definitely the most outrageous attack, tensions between the countries have been worse or at least equally in the past. The difference is that the rest of the world suddenly seems to care more. - Deepak
There will be no surgical strikes, as Pak will return the favor, this aint Iraq or Afghan lands, Pak forces are much more capable than india's - imran
Deepak - I'm not saying that internal and natural factors aren't in play in Pakistani/Indian tensions -- obviously that's a huge factor. I'm saying that outside players are exploiting this conflict, pushing it along. - Sean McBride
Sean, that they probably are, but I doubt that they can overwhelm those factors. - Deepak
This worries me greatly. I love both countries and this war crap needs to chill out in EMEA fast. Our world needs peace now more than ever. - Susan Beebe
One or two more spectacular terrorist incidents could push Pakistan and India over the brink. Pakistan and India should be cooperating to prevent those incidents from occurring. Both sides stand to lose a great deal. - Sean McBride
India is always talking lot of crap, instead of diplomacy india is imposing war on pakistan, while pakistan is busy in helping usa on afghan front. Pakistan is currently removing all forces from afghan sector, let usa fight alone. - imran
Sean, one would hope. Alas, politicians on either side are much too petty and incompetent. - Deepak
60,000 pak troops are now being deployed to defend city of Lahore, as we speak, Lahore is seventeen miles from Indian border, no Indians troop has ever set foot in Lahore in three major wars. - imran
@imran Defend the city? Has it been attacked? Is an attack imminent? - Mark VandenBerg
I spent 15+ years of my life in Pakistan and have friends from both countries. I doubt there will be any war. The consequences are too much for both sides. By engaging in the war, India would destroy all of the economic development it has done over the last two decades. And corrupt (and consequently rich) people of Pakistan will lose their powers. So, my prediction, it just would not happen unless one of the country ends-up in a Civil war and throws over the current government. - Syed F Ahmad
Pakistan forces are expecting attack in 48 hours from india, pak troops are in final preps, as they r advised by usa to expect indian attack, but I expect India to back down or its no win situation for both. - imran
Syed, pretty much my belief. It's all sabre rattling and posturing - Deepak
I for one don't think there ever will be a war between India and Pakistan. And if there is one, it will be a short lived one. All this nonsense that we hear in the media is merely political. Has anyone ever asked the common man on both sides what they want? I bet they will say just leave each other alone. People on both sides (whether hindu or muslim) share a common heritage, they have relatives living on both sides of the border. I think it's the common man who won't let this situation escalate. - Kunal Malhotra
Escalation will only lead to pointless deaths...why? what does either side hope to gain? - Susan Beebe
Its funny, how if India reacts it will be considered as "escalation", and if it doesn't Pakistan simply gets away with it (as always!) - Sumit Chachra
It is in times like these that having a mature PM like Manmohan Singh in India is reassuring. Things could have been worse. - Vishy
The least Pakistan can do is hand over the terrorists that India has listed. The politicians in Pak are still conveniently in denial of the fact that their citizens were perpetrators of the attack. - Vishy
@gregory : yes state + friends, - imran
Pakistan will not hand over anyone to India, India is manipulating the situation with lies and propaganda, and has not learned from US failures in Iraq and Afghanistan. - imran
I find it difficult to believe that the Pakistani government was behind the Mumbai terrorist attacks. Do Indians believe this? How deep has their investigation gone? - Sean McBride
Sean, I don't think India believes that Pak govt is behind it. But the problem is that Pak is providing asylum to the people who mastermind such attacks. There are also terrorist training camps in Pakistan which the Pak Govt either turns a blind eye to or doesn't have the power to contain. - Vishy
Vishy -- I understand why providing asylum for terrorists would be unacceptable, and even a provocation for a massively violent response. But are we absolutely certain that we know who financed and masterminded these attacks? - Sean McBride
Pak based Lashkar-e-Taiba did it. US and Russian intelligence corroborated it too. Apparently, the Pak Govt has banned the finance arm of the organization http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/.... But that is too little an action. - Vishy
If the Pakistani government acknowledges that Lashkar-e-Taiba was responsible for the attacks, then I agree that shutting down its financial arm is not enough. Pakistan needs to hand over anyone connected to the attacks to India. Financial reparations must be made, also, I would think. - Sean McBride
India has been creating terror in Pakistan (Sindh, Baluchistan, NwFP) for decades, they should hand over hundreds of Indians first, and India is such a virgin land no Indian has ever created terror attack in India or Pakistan, somehow Pakistani based terror always succeed to do that every few months, bunch of indian lies, misinfo pumped into west/media. Indians are self righteous in their media, indians troops and spies are sentenced by Pak regularly for terror related activities in Pak. . India stop lies! - imran
Participants in ethnic and religious conflicts damage themselves as much as they damage each other. It's a totally no-win deal. - Sean McBride

"Last year, he did three films — ‘The Savages,’ ‘Charlie Wilson’s War’ and ‘Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead’ — and in each one he was a distinct and entirely different human. It’s that humanity that is so striking — when you watch Phil work, his entire constitution seems to change. He may look like Phil, but there’s something different in his eyes. And that means he’s reconstituted himself from within, willfully rearranging his molecules to become another human being." - Bret Taylor via Bookmarklet

I like him but I don't really get the versatility thing. I feel like he plays pretty similar characters in those recent movies -- troubled figures who are in a position of some authority and privilege but are pulled down by venal character flaws and entanglements they can't quite escape. Sometimes he comes out on top, sometimes not, and the setting changes a lot, but the struggle generally has a very similar nature. - ⓞnor

"Digg Director David Sze, a partner with venture capital firm Greylock Partners, acknowledges the value of his firm's Digg investment has likely dropped even since the September venture investment. "If I had to sell Digg today, I would probably not be getting the valuation I got earlier this year," he says. One reason may be that Digg's public profile is much larger than its financial might. Last year the company lost $2.8 million on $4.8 million in revenue, according to Digg financial statements reviewed by BusinessWeek. In the first three quarters of 2008, Digg lost $4 million on $6.4 million in revenue. Adelson declined to comment on the figures." - Bret Taylor via Bookmarklet

i love the direction harbaugh is taking the team. this year they were tougher and more competitive. now they have to learn how to close out games. a big play or two in the closing minutes of, say, the oregon and ucla games, a few tds at the end of those early long drives in the big game at cal, and you're looking at a 7-5 or 8-4 bowl team right now. - .LAG
I agree. The team is actually competitive and fun to watch now. I am disappointed we didn't close out 6 wins this year though - there were so many games we should have won that we didn't. - Bret Taylor
Do you think Harbaugh is going to get an offer from an NFL team? I think at least a couple of teams will try and tempt him away. - Cains
@cains: stanford extended harbaugh's contract through 2014...so hopefully he'll stay, but there's always a "buyout" clause in these deals and money talks. not just because i'm an alum, but i think football success at Stanford is a great sports story, because, with all respect to the USCs, Ohio States, and Floridas of the world, our guys are actually STUDENT-athletes, not semi-pros hanging out on campus. .LOLz - .LAG

I made some progress, but I have to say I am not an Interface Builder fan thus far. I just can't handle drawing my programs. It seems that every non-Web UI platform involves drawing stuff and code generation (or in this case, magic black box code with delegates). So not only do I have to use XCode instead of Emacs, I have to drag lines around to connect my views to controllers. Ugh. But I am going to keep going and produce something just because I am excited about the app (despite my groaning)... - Bret Taylor
Nice Guide, although I like normal C. I never get used to objective programming. - Ryo
Unfortuantly I don't own a mac, but this would make a nice summer project. - Roberto Bonini
@Bret: I had the exact same feeling about Interface Builder. I just can't get used to having everything be "magic" that's shoved into some bizarre binary file, slurped up by your app's runtime, and used to randomly poke references into your objects. Blah. - Joel Webber
You can use emacs and command line tools to build iphone apps, it just takes a bit more setup. Interface builder can be pretty handy for laying out screens, and I prefer its approach of being data driven, rather than generating code. However, I would prefer its binary format to be xml, which would make it more similar to web development. A lot of people just use code to create user interface, bypassing interface builder for most things, although this involves reading more docs and sample apps. - Chris White
Chris, The default data file format for IB is now XML. s/nib/xib/ - Gary Burd
Gary, thanks. I guess I never tried opening it up, and was assuming it was still nib from the NeXT days. Does the x in xib stand for xml? Does anyone ever create these files by hand in a text editor? - Chris White

"Web entrepreneurs who refer to their start-ups as their second family, take note: Friday is the second annual Spouse 2.0 Day, dedicated to the significant others of start-up founders. To celebrate, founders are asked to buy their significant others a gift, then post to their blogs or Twitter streams about it, using the “Spouse 2.0″ tag. The stories will be collected on the project’s Web site. “Because of the long hours that traditionally come with running an Internet start-up business, everything else seems to get pushed aside, like friends, family,” said Ashley Angell, one of the event’s organizers. “When you’re sending e-mails from bed at 2 in the morning, which invariably all start-up founders do, they get neglected and put up with an awful lot of stuff.” Leaving the BlackBerry outside the bedroom is an option on Spouse 2.0 Day." - Bret Taylor via Bookmarklet
